Recent Sightings

HWDT’s Community Sightings Network encourages residents, local wildlife operators and visitors to the area to report their sightings of whales, dolphins and porpoises to HWDT. This information is important because it contributes to our understanding of where and when particular species occur. Report your sightings HERE.

HWDT receives the majority of its live sighting reports during the summer months, between May and September, which reflects the increased number of boat and land observers, the fine weather and the influx of seasonal visitors to the area, including minke whales and basking sharks. Sightings are less frequent during the winter months because poor weather conditions and shorter daylight hours make seeing marine animals difficult. Seasonal visitors leave the area, although bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises are year-round residents.
